<p>GOVERNMENT penny-pinching is not of itself a bad thing. Taxpayers&#8217; money should be spent only in the public interest and for society&#8217;s betterment. But there comes a point where government meanness is counterproductive. <p>The NSW taxpayers are going to gift $175 million to the Reliance Rail consortium (&#8221;Waratah bailout on the way&#8221;, February 4-5). There is no legal requirement to give the consortium &#8211; Downer EDI, AMP Capital Investors, The Royal Bank of Scotland and a renamed remnant of the failed Babcock &amp; Brown &#8211; a cent.
