GOVERNMENT penny-pinching is not of itself a bad thing. Taxpayers’ money should be spent only in the public interest and for society’s betterment. But there comes a point where government meanness is counterproductive. Such are the ham-fisted attempts by the NSW Community Services Minister, Pru Goward, to cut her department’s spending by adding to the burden on foster carers of often troubled and vulnerable youth. The NSW taxpayers are going to gift $175 million to the Reliance Rail consortium (”Waratah bailout on the way”, February 4-5). There is no legal requirement to give the consortium – Downer EDI, AMP Capital Investors, The Royal Bank of Scotland and a renamed remnant of the failed Babcock & Brown – a cent.
